ACCA BT (F1) Exam Paper Overview

The ACCA Business and Technology (BT) paper is an introductory-level qualification that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how businesses operate and the role of technology in modern organizations. It focuses on developing awareness of business structures, governance, and the impact of external factors on organizational performance. The ACCA BT syllabus is designed to equip students with essential knowledge of business functions, ethics, and digital transformation, making it a strong foundation for further ACCA studies.

ACCA BT (F1) Exam Syllabus and Structure

The ACCA BT syllabus covers key areas such as business organization and structure, leadership and management, accounting and finance functions, and the role of information technology in business. Students learn about corporate governance, professional ethics, and the importance of internal controls. The syllabus also explores how businesses use data and technology to enhance decision-making and efficiency, along with understanding the external environment, including economic, legal, and social influences on organizations.

The ACCA BT exam is a computer-based exam consisting entirely of objective test questions. These include multiple-choice, multiple-response, and multi-task questions that assess knowledge and understanding across the full syllabus. The exam is designed to test conceptual clarity and the ability to apply business concepts to real-world scenarios. Strong reading skills, time management, and the ability to interpret scenarios accurately are essential for achieving a high score.

To perform well in ACCA BT, students should prioritize a strong conceptual understanding of the syllabus rather than memorizing information. Practicing a wide range of objective test questions on a regular basis helps improve accuracy and familiarity with exam patterns. Key focus areas should include governance, ethics, business operations, and the role of technology. In addition, consistent revision, attempting mock exams under timed conditions, and relying on ACCA-approved study resources can significantly enhance confidence and overall exam performance.

Mock exam

BT (Business and Technology) is the first paper at the ACCA Applied Knowledge level and is typically the starting point for students entering the main ACCA qualification. It is designed for school leavers, graduates, and career changers who want to build a strong foundation in how businesses operate, how technology supports organisational performance, and how professional ethics apply in practice.

Most students require between 6 and 8 weeks of structured study, totalling approximately 70 to 80 hours. Study time can vary by individual — some students may need slightly more or less. BT is a broad, concept-based paper covering business structures, management, and technology, so consistent reading, concise note-making, and regular question practice are essential for retaining the wide range of topics.

The syllabus covers the business organisation, its stakeholders and the external environment, business organisational structure, functions and governance, accounting and reporting systems, controls and compliance, leading and managing individuals and teams, personal effectiveness and communication, and professional ethics in accounting and business. The role of data, technology, and cybersecurity is also emphasised throughout.

The BT exam is a 2-hour computer-based exam (CBE) consisting of 50 objective test questions. The paper includes 46 two-mark questions and 4 one-mark questions, giving a total of 100 marks. Questions include multiple choice, multiple response, number entry, and matching formats. The pass mark is 50%, and the exam is available on demand.

No prior business or accounting knowledge is required. BT is specifically designed as an entry-level paper for beginners. The syllabus introduces fundamental business, management, and technology concepts in a structured way, making it ideal for school leavers, career changers, and students without any professional or academic background in business.

BT and FBT share substantially the same syllabus and learning outcomes. BT is the Applied Knowledge level paper within the main ACCA qualification, while FBT sits within the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification. Students who pass FBT receive full exemption from BT, allowing seamless progression into the Applied Skills level of the ACCA qualification.

The leading causes of failure include underestimating the breadth of the syllabus, relying solely on memorisation without understanding, weak grasp of governance and ethics concepts, poor knowledge of leadership and motivation theories, and inadequate practice of objective test questions. Many students also skip timed mock exams, which affects exam-hall speed and accuracy.

Our course includes live interactive tutor support, updated-recorded lectures for flexible preparation, comprehensive study notes, customized study planner, weekly basis live sessions, topic related quizzes, progress tests, detailed marking feedback, and a full mock exams with examiner-style debriefs. Students also gain access to our question bank for kit questions practice.
