ACCA MA2 Exam Paper Overview

The ACCA Managing Costs and Finance (MA2) paper is part of the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification and is designed to build on the basics of management accounting by introducing more detailed cost management and financial control techniques. It focuses on how businesses plan, monitor, and control costs to improve performance and support decision-making. ACCA MA2 Exam Syllabus and Structure

MA2 (Managing Costs and Finances) is an intermediate paper within the ACCA Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification. It is designed for students who have completed MA1 or have equivalent management accounting knowledge, and who wish to progress towards the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification or the Applied Knowledge level of the ACCA qualification.

Most students require between 7 and 9 weeks of structured study, totalling approximately 80 to 100 hours. Study time can vary by individual — some students may need slightly more or less. MA2 builds on the foundations of MA1 and introduces more advanced costing and decision-making techniques, so consistent study, regular numerical practice, and timed mock attempts are essential for passing on the first attempt.

The syllabus covers management information, cost recording (materials, labour, and overheads), costing techniques (absorption costing, marginal costing, and job and batch costing), decision-making (breakeven analysis and short-term decisions), cash management (including cash flow forecasting), providing information to management, and the use of spreadsheets in management accounting.

The MA2 exam is a 2-hour computer-based exam (CBE) consisting of 50 objective test questions, each worth 2 marks, giving a total of 100 marks. Questions include multiple choice, number entry, and matching formats. The pass mark is 50%, and the exam is available on demand throughout the year at approved centres.

MA1 is not a formal prerequisite, but it is strongly recommended. MA2 assumes a working knowledge of cost classification, cost behaviour, and the recording of basic management information. Students who skip MA1 without equivalent preparation often struggle with the more advanced costing and decision-making topics tested in MA2.

MA1 focuses on recording and providing basic management information under supervision. MA2 advances this by introducing full costing techniques, short-term decision-making, and basic cash management. MA (Management Accounting) at the Applied Knowledge level then progresses further into budgeting, variance analysis, and performance measurement across a broader business context.

The leading causes of failure include weak understanding of absorption and marginal costing, poor handling of overhead allocation and apportionment, confusion with breakeven analysis, inadequate practice of cash flow forecasting, and careless reading of exam requirements. Many students also underestimate the paper and neglect timed numerical practice.
