Most students require 10 to 12 weeks of structured study, dedicating 160 to 180 hours in total. SBL is the longest and most demanding paper in the ACCA qualification, so early preparation, extensive case study practice, and regular written attempts under timed conditions are essential for success.

SBL is unique in both length and style. It is a 4-hour case study exam that integrates strategy, leadership, governance, risk, ethics, technology, finance, and organisational control into a single evolving scenario. Unlike other papers, there are no separate technical sections — every answer must be grounded in the business context provided.

The syllabus covers leadership and culture, governance, strategy, risk management, technology and data analytics, organisational control and audit, finance in planning and decision-making, enabling success through innovation and change, and professional skills. Ethics and professional scepticism are woven throughout every section of the exam.

The SBL exam is a 4-hour computer-based exam (CBE) consisting of a single integrated case study with multiple task requirements totalling 80 technical marks. A further 20 marks are awarded for professional skills, including communication, commercial acumen, analysis, scepticism, and evaluation. The pass mark is 50%.

Professional skills marks reward candidates for demonstrating the qualities expected of a senior finance professional. These include structured communication, insightful analysis, exercise of scepticism, commercial awareness, and balanced evaluation. Students earn these marks by tailoring tone, format, and reasoning to the role and audience specified in each requirement.

No, practical experience is not mandatory, but commercial awareness is. Students should regularly read business news, case studies, and annual reports to understand how real organisations operate. This contextual awareness helps in producing relevant, realistic, and persuasive answers that align with examiner expectations.
