ACCA FA1 Exam Paper Overview

The ACCA Recording Financial Transactions (FA1) paper is a beginner-level qualification within the Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) pathway, aimed at introducing students to the fundamentals of financial accounting. It focuses on the accurate recording and processing of financial transactions using double-entry bookkeeping. The ACCA FA1 syllabus is well-suited for individuals with little or no prior accounting knowledge, as it lays the groundwork for understanding how financial information is generated and used within a business.

ACCA FA1 Exam Syllabus and Structure

The ACCA FA1 syllabus covers key areas such as the role of accounting, types of financial transactions, and the core principles of double-entry bookkeeping. Students learn how to record transactions in journals, post them to ledger accounts, and prepare trial balances. In addition, the syllabus includes topics like bank reconciliations, control accounts, and the identification and correction of errors, helping students develop accuracy and confidence in handling financial records.

The ACCA FA1 exam is a computer-based assessment made up entirely of objective test questions, including multiple-choice and basic scenario-based tasks. It is designed to assess a student’s understanding of bookkeeping fundamentals and their ability to apply them correctly in simple situations. The exam requires precision, attention to detail, and effective time management to perform well.

To achieve success in ACCA FA1, students should concentrate on developing a strong grasp of double-entry principles through regular and consistent practice. Attempting a variety of objective test questions will help enhance both speed and accuracy. Particular attention should be given to important areas such as ledger accounts, trial balances, and bank reconciliations. Following a disciplined revision routine, practicing under timed conditions, and using FIA-approved study resources will help students build confidence and perform effectively in the exam.

Mock exam

Final mock exam with detailed feedback to prepare you for the real thing.

FA1 (Recording Financial Transactions) is an introductory paper within the ACCA Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) qualification. It is designed for students beginning their accounting journey, those without prior accounting knowledge, and professionals seeking a structured entry route into ACCA. It also forms the foundation for the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification.

Most students require between 6 and 8 weeks of structured study, totalling approximately 70 to 80 hours. Study time can vary by individual — some students may need slightly more or less. FA1 is an entry-level paper, but consistent study and regular question practice are essential to build accurate bookkeeping skills and confidence with double-entry principles.

The syllabus covers the business and accounting environment, the role of the bookkeeper, types of business transactions and related documentation, duality of transactions and the double-entry system, banking and petty cash, payroll, ledger accounts, the cash book, the journal, the trial balance, and correction of errors.

The FA1 exam is a 2-hour computer-based exam (CBE) consisting of 50 objective test questions, each worth 2 marks, giving a total of 100 marks. Questions include multiple choice, number entry, and matching formats. The pass mark is 50%, and the exam is available on demand throughout the year.

No prior accounting knowledge is required. FA1 is specifically designed as a starting point for absolute beginners. The syllabus builds gradually from basic concepts such as source documents and duality of transactions through to trial balances, making it ideal for students who are new to the subject.

FA1 focuses on recording basic financial transactions and maintaining ledgers under supervision. FA2 (Maintaining Financial Records) builds on this by covering extended trial balances, accruals, and basic financial statements. FA (Financial Accounting) at the Applied Knowledge level then takes students into full financial statement preparation under IFRS principles.

The leading causes of failure include weak understanding of double-entry bookkeeping, confusion between debit and credit rules, poor knowledge of source documents, inadequate practice of ledger and cash book questions, and careless reading of exam requirements. Many students also underestimate FA1 and neglect timed practice.

Our course includes live interactive tutor support, updated-recorded lectures for flexible preparation, beginner-friendly study notes, customized study planner, weekly basis live sessions, step-by-step double-entry workshops, topic related quizzes, progress tests, detailed marking feedback, and 2 full mock exams with examiner-style debriefs. Students also gain access to our question bank.
